Brown adipose tissue (BAT) or brown fat is the "other" fat in your body. Brown fat plays an important role in burning calories for energy. The white fat most people think of or see when trimming a steak before cooking is stored by the body.
In previous studies coffee has been shown to be beneficial as an anti-inflammatory, and having benefits for preventing colon cancer recurrence and protective effects in melanoma.
In their study published in the journal Scientific Reports researchers led by Michael Symonds of the the School of Medicine at the University of Nottingham, used a thermal imaging technique that shows tissues in different colors that correlate to temperature. Hot appearing yellow to red and cold showing green to blue. The researchers used the imaging technique to 'see' what happened to brown fat after participants consumed different foods.
What they found was that brown fat got hotter after people drank coffee, suggesting the brown fat is triggered into burning sugar and fat.
The next step is to determine what component of coffee is stimulating the brown fat in an effort to develop a therapy for obesity.
