"These are highly significant findings for the treatment of patients with HCC (hepatocellular carcinoma)," Richard Finn MD of Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center UCLA, and lead author of the study said in a press release. "Many thousands of patients worldwide could benefit from this treatment and it can be considered a major breakthrough - the first improvement in treatment for these types of cases in 13 years and a treatment long awaited by doctors."
The data was from the ongoing IMbrave150 clinical trial that is comparing the combination therapy of atezolizumab (TECENTRIQ) and bevacizumab (Avastin), a chemotherapy drug, to patients treated with sorafenib (Nexavar) chemotherapy alone. The Digital Cancer Summit 2021 is an online meeting of the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL).
The IMbrave150 trial has enrolled 501 patients at multiple centers since 2018, with 336 randomly assigned to the combination therapy and 165 patients in the sorafenib group. All patients had advanced liver cancer that could not be treated with surgery and had not been treated with chemotherapy.
The results showed that overall survival was 19.2 month for the patients treated with the atezo+bev combination compared to 13.4 months for the sorafenib group. At 18 months after treatment 52 percent of the combination group survived compared to 40 percent of the sorafenib group.
