A small number of participants, most with cancers of the blood or who had been treated with an immunotherapy drug, however, showed no immune response after vaccination.
The results of the study were published online June 18, 2021 in the journal Cancer Cell.
The study by researchers at the Mays Cancer Center at the University of Texas San Antonio and the University of Geneva vaccinated 131 cancer patients, 106 had solid tumor cancers such as breast or prostate cancer, and 25 had blood cancers such as leukemia.
Test of antibodies to the COVID-19 virus after the first dose showed that 81 percent of the patients had developed antibodies to fight the virus, and week after the second dose of the vaccine 94 percent of the patients had developed antibodies to the virus.
When they looked at which patients developed the needed immune response to the COVID-19 virus they found that patients with solid tumors had developed the best response, while those with blood cancers achieved a much lower antibody response to the virus. Similarly those treated with chemotherapy had a much higher level of antibodies to the virus than those treated with immunotherapies.
Those treated with immunotherapy such as Rituxan or Zevalin within six months of vaccination achieved no antibody response to the COVID-19 virus.
The researchers concluded that patients with high-risk cancers, especially those receiving immunotherapies that target CD-20 should continue to take precautions even after vaccination.
