Common cholesterol drug may boost survival in some breast cancer patients

CANCER DIGEST – Aug. 6, 2021 – Statins used to lower cholesterol may increase survival in women with a rare aggressive form of breast cancer, a new study shows.

The study published in the journal Cancer, used data collected from 23,192 women over the age of 66 with stage 1 to 3 breast cancer. Of those women, 2,281 were incidental statin users, meaning they started taking a statin drug within one year of their cancer diagnosis.

Led by Kevin Nead, MD, at the University of Texas MD Anderson, the researchers found a 58 percent improvement in breast cancer-specific survival among breast cancer patients whose tumors did not have receptors for estrogen, progesterone or HER2 , so called triple-negative breast cancer) and took statins compared to similar women who did not take statins. Similarly, they found a 30 percent relative increase in overall survival.

“There is already a body of literature on statins and breast cancer and the results have been inconsistent,” Nead said in a press release. “Previous research has looked at breast cancer as only one disease, but we know there are many subtypes of breast cancer and we wanted to focus our research on this particularly aggressive form of breast cancer that has limited effective treatment options.”

Analysis of the results also showed that women diagnosed at earlier stages of breast cancer benefited more from statin use, and that those who took high-intensity statins had the greatest improvement in survival. Such statins are in a class of drugs called lipophilic statins, which includes simvastatin (Flolipid® and Zocor®), atorvastatin (Lipitor®), fluvastatin (Lescol®), and pitavastatin (Livalo®).

Triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a particularly aggressive form of breast cancer that comprises from 10-20 percent of all breast cancer diagnoses. Such tumors are resistant to common therapies that target those three receptors and have a poor prognosis.

The researchers called for prospective trials to validate these study results and to better define the potential role of statins in TNBC treatment.
