Electromagnetic waves successfully shrink cancerous brain tumor

CANCER DIGEST – July 24, 2021 – A brain cancer patient who had previously undergone surgery, chemotherapy and an experimental gene therapy to no avail, achieved a 31% reduction in his tumor through use a new therapy, called oncomagnetics that bathes the tumor in electromagnetic waves.

The case study published in the journal Frontiers in Oncology by researchers at Houston Methodist Neurological Institute showed the promising therapy worked as promised in pre-clinical studies. A single case study is a long way from becoming a treatment option that can be offered to others, but it does show that the treatment was effective in a human subject.
Glioblastoma is the deadliest type of brain cancer with most patients living only months following diagnosis. Over the years it has been found to be a stubbornly difficult cancer to treat with conventional cancer therapies due in part to a special protection the brain has, called the blood brain barrier.

Therapies that normally are transported through blood vessels, such as chemotherapy, typically don’t get into the brain due to this protective barrier. Consequently brain cancer researchers at Houston Methodist have been looking for alternative treatments.

Based on their research on how cells in the brain generate and use energy, the researchers led by David Baskin, MD, FACS, FAANS, began experimenting with magnetic waves as a means to disrupt the abnormal energy production of cancerous glioblastoma cells.

The team developed a helmet device a patient wears that produces an oscillating magnetic field generated by rotating magnets in a specific frequency and timing pattern. After a two-hour training treatment, the patient can perform the treatment at home for up to six hours a day.

The 53-year-old patient in this case died of an unrelated injury that occurred from a fall during the study, and his family agreed to an autopsy, which revealed that the tumor had shrunk by 31% in just 37 days after starting the treatment.

The researchers conclude that the oncomagnetic therapy was well-tolerated by the patient, appears to be safe and effective and should be pursued in larger clinical studies to further determine safety and effectiveness.
