The Swedish study was presented in Lisbon, Portugal at EuroPrevent 2019, a conference of the European Society of Cardiology.
The researchers analyzed the health records of 316,000 Swedish adults who had an Occupational Health Services (OHS) health screening for work between 1995 and 2015. They also looked at Swedish national registries to find data on mortality rates and first-time cardiovascular events, such as heart attacks or chest pains and whether they were fatal or not.
One of the factors recorded in the OHS screenings was VO2 max, the maximum amount of oxygen a person uses of during intense exercise. In lay terms it is a measure of how much oxygen you are able to take in and use while the body is working hard. It is expressed in terms of milliliters of oxygen used in one minute per kilogram of body weight.
When the researchers looked at the VO2 max and compared it with those who died from cardiovascular events they found that death rates declined by 2.8 percent for each milliliter increase in VO2 max, and the number of cardiovascular events dropped by 3.2 percent for each milliliter increase in VO2 max. The also found that these benefits were seen among both men and women across all ages and fitness levels.
The researchers say their data shows that the more active you are the lower your risk of heart attacks, strokes, and death, but that even a little activity offers these benefits.
"For most people, just being more active in daily – taking the stairs, exiting the metro station early, cycling to work – is enough to benefit health," study author Dr. Elin Ekblom-Back told Medical News Today, "since levels are so low to start with. The more you do, the better."
